The Grates

Gravity Won’t Get You High

What makes you love a record? Is it the sincerity of the lyrical content? Is it the slightly silly, but completely engaging way the music hits you? Is it the way you can put it on and dance to it in your underwear when you’re all alone? Is it the feeling of hearing something truly unique? No matter what you love about music, this review is starting to sound like a car commercial. Well, just like a new car, Aussie trio The Grates’ first full-length will not make your life better. It might be fun to listen to. You might enjoy it. But as soon as the new-car smell wears off this uprising of indie “look at me” vibe, you can be sure you’re going to wish you still had your $12.99. Gravity Won’t Get You High is just strange enough to be interesting, just rockin’ enough to be fun, but the final summation is it’s still a lump of mediocrity. But, I can’t rag on it too much. I mean, mediocre will get the job done. Plus, the liner-notes booklet is really cool.
