Saint Cecilia

Saint Cecilia might or might not be Dave Grohl & Co.’s final release, but if the current indefinite hiatus sticks, at least the band will have ended on a high note. It’s a no-nonsense, straightforward rocker with five songs that range from the high-energy pop-punk of the dynamic “Sean” to the signature Grohl pop-rock of the title track. Grohl bellows like a hound from hell in the raucous, distortion-drenched rocker “Savior Breath” and croons melodically on the slow-burning “Iron Rooster,” which features gorgeous piano interludes alongside a fiery guitar solo near the end. With the EP having been recorded at Hotel Saint Cecilia in Austin, Texas, and Saint Cecilia being the patroness of musicians, the emphasis on religious imagery is a natural fit and potentially makes the EP a meditation on what might come next, even as Grohl and the guys live in the moment.
