Building on success

Forget the party school image. Chico State is becoming known as a sports powerhouse.

The Chico News & Review doesn’t normally do sports reporting. We leave the box scores and sporting clichés to the local daily. We do, however, try to recognize general trends and/or anomalies and report on them accordingly. That is what we have done with this annual Back to School issue, where we bring you this series of stories about Chico State’s athletic prowess—last year the school finished fifth out of 282 schools for overall performance in Division II competition—along with related stories about Butte College’s extraordinary athletics director, Mike Liddell, an insider’s view of the Chico Rooks pro soccer team and a look at university President Paul Zingg’s books on golf and baseball.
