Since 1977, Chico News & Review has delivered independent, award-winning journalism to the greater Chico area – covering wildfires, local government, the arts and community voices. As one of Northern California’s most trusted alternative voices, CN&R is committed to its mission: to inform, inspire, and foster community engagement through in-depth stories and ongoing coverage of local culture, the arts and events.

Each year, we also celebrate the best our community has to offer with the Best of Chico awards – where thousands of readers vote to recognize their favorite local businesses, artists, restaurants, and community champions. It’s our way of honoring the people and places that make Chico such a vibrant and special place to live.

Explore what makes Chico weird, wonderful, and uniquely Chico. Support our work – and the future of independent media – by engaging with our stories and supporting our mission.

Independent Journalism Fund

The News & Review Independent Journalism Fund’s mission is simple: to investigate and report on the important issues that affect our Northern California communities, to amplify the voices of the under-represented, and to foster greater public awareness and engagement around these issues. Through our independent, award-winning journalism, we strive to hold those in power accountable and empower our readers with the information they need to make informed decisions. As a non-profit and non-partisan fund, we rely on the generosity of our supporters to continue producing high-quality journalism that makes a difference. Every donation to our fund is tax-deductible and goes directly towards supporting our mission. Thank you for your support.

Solving Sacramento

As a founding member of Solving Sacramento, the News & Review is proud to be part of a collaborative effort to produce and share news stories on the critical issues that impact the greater Sacramento metro region. Our collaborative includes a diverse group of non-profit and for-profit local newsrooms, educational institutions, and community partners who are committed to working together to drive positive change through journalism. In 2022, we launched two initiatives: solutions to the affordable housing crisis and solutions to rebooting the arts. We aim to raise awareness about these pressing issues and showcase innovative solutions that can help move our community forward. We are currently raising funds to support our efforts and ensure that we have the resources needed to produce high-quality journalism that makes a real difference in the lives of our readers. Thank you for your support of Solving Sacramento.

Letters to the Future

The News & Review's Letters to the Future project was created with a simple but powerful goal: to ask some of the most insightful and creative minds of our time to write letters to future generations, predicting the outcome of the critical U.N. climate talks in 2015. We invited authors, artists, scientists, and other thought leaders to share their perspectives on this crucial issue. These letters were published in 40 alternative weeklies and other media outlets across the country, reaching a combined audience of over four million print readers and 11 million online visitors. But we didn't stop there. We also sent these letters directly to hundreds of targeted delegates and citizens ahead of the U.N. climate talks in Paris. We believe that by harnessing the power of journalism and creativity, we can help shape a better future for all.
