It’s Apple Hill time again. If you want to get a respite from the pie eaters in the El Dorado County foothills, make a detour to Boeger Winery. It’s located a few miles west of Apple Hill’s epicenter off Highway 50. Winemaker Greg Boeger may or may not know how to make apple cider, but he does know a thing or two about manipulating grape juice. Step into the tasting room, a stone wine cellar dating from 1872, to sample the wide range of fine wines Boeger produces. Then, with your picnic basket and a newly purchased bottle, head out to one of the tables beneath the mature pear orchard or next to the pond in the redwood grove. Boeger is a good place to unwind after a bucolic day in the foothills, and perhaps a good place to sample that huge apple pie you thought you were going to save until you got home.
