“Solitude,” the 1989 sculpture that commemorates Basque contributions to the culture, was vandalized last week with the theft of bronze plates that can be sold for scrap metal. The plates bore the names of donors who helped pay for the landmark. The $350,000 cost of the sculpture came in part sheepherding families and from Basques in Europe. The sculpture, by acclaimed Basque artist Nestor Basterretxea, portrays a shepherd holding a lamb on his shoulder.
