Juno

Rated 4.0

Ellen Page takes another step towards stardom with this wonderfully funny film about a high school student Juno MacGuff (Page) who gets pregnant and decides to put the child up for adoption. Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman are great as the imperfect prospective parents, while Michael Cera delivers another good one as the baby’s daddy. Allison Janney and J.K. Simmons have some of the film’s funnier moments as Juno’s parents, who aren’t all that happy about their daughter getting pregnant but deal with the event in their own laid back way (Janney’s criticism of an ultrasound technician is one of 2007’s great moments). The script by Diablo Cody is lighthearted and funny, with a touch of sarcasm. Page is right at home with the sarcasm, and her comic timing is impeccable. One of 2007’s better ensemble casts, and easily one of the past year’s better comedies.
