Get shocked

On the cover of Michelle Shocked’s latest release, Deep Natural, is a surreal psychedelic nature scene, which gives no hint of the album’s thunderous passion and Shocked’s own throaty wail. With roots nourished in the soil of gospel music, blues and Green Party politics, the Texas-bred artist and hardcore political activist has been making music—and pissing off the narrow-minded—since her college days in the 1980s. Shocked fought her way to the top of the folk-singer game, battling exploitive record companies and managing to retain the rights to her entire catalog of music—a rare feat indeed. Now, Shocked will appear at the Upstage Center Theatre in Carson City at 7 p.m. April 28. Tickets are $22.50. But before Shocked rocks, local musician Kate Cotter will open for Shana Morrison (daughter of Van) at 7:30 p.m. April 27. Tickets are $15-$18. Call 882-8900 or visit www.theupstagecenter.net.
