Fiesta for kids

Kids Club Free After School, a hands-on program for the underprivileged children of central Sparks, was created when a group of Sparks citizens noticed that many unsupervised children were wandering the streets after school. Two years ago, when the organization opened its doors, two children attended. Now, the group pulls an average of 35 children per day off the streets, feeds them a balanced meal and gives them academic and social support. Visual arts and contemporary/hip-hop dance classes are provided weekly along with indoor and outdoor sports and daily tutoring. "We are growing rapidly and considering expansion alternatives," says Rachel Hepburn, executive director of Kids Club. To generate funds, Kids Club is hosting its second annual Taco Fiesta on Saturday, April 20, at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church. Local chef Sergio Cortes will be preparing tacos ($1), tamales ($2), rice and beans. A raffle features $2,000 worth of donated items from local restaurants and shops. Raffle tickets will be available at the event. For more information, call Hepburn at 358-5505.
