Debit cardholders face fee

In Nevada and three other states, Wells Fargo is trying out a new monthly fee for allowing people access to their money.

The monthly $3 fee on debit cardholders who use their cards is being tested in Georgia, Oregon, Nevada and New Mexico.

The fee comes after Congress directed the Federal Reserve to cap fees imposed by banks on merchants for processing debit fee charges. The Fed imposed an unexpectedly high cap of 21 to 24 cents per transaction after proposing a fee about half that.

The bank also announced the end of its debit rewards program, effective in October.
