Why Birmingham trio Verbena changed its name to “Alabama Boys Choir” for about five minutes is a mystery. Perhaps cooler heads at Capitol Records, which signed the lads, convinced them to change it back; the label will release the Rob Schnapf-produced La Musica Negra—or, as Spinal Tap once put it, “none more black”—this Tuesday. At any rate, Verbena plays the kind of stuff that makes you want to join in on slide guitar. You can check ’em out Friday, May 16, at Old Ironsides, 1901 10th Street. The show starts at 9 p.m., and the cover’s $8. Also on the bill is On the Speakers, which features Ian Sefchick, formerly of Creeper Lagoon.
