“What of Mrs. Eddy?” wrote Susan B. Anthony. “No man ever obtained so large a following in so short a time.” Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, is the subject of a nationally touring exhibit visiting Sacramento this month. Eddy experienced a cripling fall in 1866 and healed herself completely through prayer. Inspired by her success, she became determined to discover the science behind her healing and teach it to others. Her resulting book, Science and Health, has since sold more than 9 million copies in 16 languages. She went on to found the Church of Christ, Scientist and publish the Christian Science Monitor (at the age of 87!) as a response to the “yellow journalism” of the day. Eddy’s accomplishments as writer, orator and relentless explorer of the connection between mental outlook and physical well-being are highlighted in a multi-media display that originated at the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls. The exhibit is on view daily at the Central Library, 828 I St. Exhibit hours are 10am-6pm Monday and Friday; 10am-9pm Tuesday through Thursday; 10am-5pm Saturday and noon-5pm Sunday through August. Admission is free. Call 264-2920 for more information.
