California style

Assuage those “501 Blues” with a trip to the Golden State Museum’s summertime exhibit Levi Strauss and the California Dream. Strauss, a Bavarian immigrant, journeyed to California during the Gold Rush and set up shop on the San Francisco waterfront. His riveted “waist overalls” (as jeans were called then) quickly became the outfit of choice for miners and farmers in search of fortune. Levi Strauss Co. continues to prosper today, while maintaining a commitment to employee benefits and an ethical standard for their contractors (i.e. no sweatshop labor) yet to be matched by any other Fortune 500 company. Discover the origins of the Levi legacy in this historic display of advertising and jeans from as far back as the 1800s. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3.50 for children. 1020 O St. Through September 22. Call 653-7424 for more information.
