Jitney

Rated 4.0

Celebration Arts brings the late '70s episode of August Wilson's “century cycle” to life—complete with rotary-dial payphone—in this exploration of the relationships between black men in the inner city. Tory Scroggins has an auspicious local debut as a Vietnam vet trying to build a life. Preston Collier and Noah Hayes explore the tensions between a disappointed father and a recently incarcerated son. Jitney is directed by James Wheatley, who keeps Wilson's poetic language front and center. Th, F, Sa 8pm; Su 2pm. $8-$15. Through 10/5.
