Drink Me: Whatever the weather

Salty lemonade, Pho Bac Hoa Viet

Salt's all the rage these days, especially in desserts and drinks. But Vietnamese salty lemonade (chanh muôi) is an old favorite. The one at Pho Bac Hoa Viet is a perfectly simple blend of salted preserved lemon, water and sugar. It's great in summer, when you're parched and need salt, but it's also great in winter, when you're sniffling. In fact, it's sometimes served hot as a cold remedy. I like it best iced and served in the old-fashioned soda fountain glasses used at the Broadway location, slurped with a straw any time of year. 1827 Broadway, (916) 443-7888.
