Something’s Gotta Give

Rated 4.0 Not enough can be said about how absolutely charming Diane Keaton is in this sweet and nutty romantic comedy. As a 55-year-old playwright with an older playboy (Jack Nicholson) and a young doctor (Keanu Reeves) falling for her, she makes what could have been a conventional slog massively enjoyable. Much of the credit also goes to Nicholson, who pokes fun at himself as a man addicted to younger women. Writer-director Nancy Meyers resorts to routine romantic comedy garbage at a few turns, but Nicholson and Keaton overcome the inconsistencies. Reeves does a nice job, freeing himself of the stoic Matrix Neo and having some charming fun. Expect Keaton to be in the running for Oscar. It’s her best work since Annie Hall.
