Power to the people

NV Energy announced last week that it signed a grant agreement with the Department of Energy, which will provide $138 million in funding for its $301 million Advanced Service Delivery project. According to a NV Energy press release, “The ASD project will provide NV Energy with the Smart Grid infrastructure necessary to reduce operating costs and provide new options for customers to help manage their energy usage.”

A smart grid is essentially a more sophisticated energy network that allows two-way communication and analysis of power use. It may enable a closer tracking of home energy use that may allow power companies to turn off appliances during peak energy use periods and turn them on off-peak, when prices are lower. A smart grid may also allow for easier net-metering, the selling of home-generated power back to the power utility.
