Eight Gigs: Waning

Fri., March 11, 8 p.m., Starlite Lounge, $7

Waning’s latest album, The Funeral Mountains, is a collection of six tracks inspired by native myths, California history and the childhood dreams of vocalist-keyboardist Susan Hunt. Ambient tones and trippy spells compressed with an auditory heaviness are arranged throughout the album with the intent to inspire different moods and transport the listener into otherworldly sonic dimensions. It’s intense, yet scales between doom metal and psychedelic with its gentler moments found in songs like “The Grove/Rootless,” which builds slowly with soft, ethereal tones. 1517 21st Street, www.waning.bandcamp.com.
