Crammed with memories of the hotel and the family who built it, the book chronicles the building’s inception to its demolition. For background, Cafferata uses menus, entertainers, room descriptions and personal interviews. The book’s high points are the photographs, drawings and reproductions of Mapes memorabilia. But the author’s clear emotions about the building’s fate, combined with personal remembrances, bog down portions of the book.
