Over the weekend, General Manager John Murphy and I attended the Nevada Press Association’s annual awards dinner in lovely Mesquite, Nevada, where the plaques were bestowed for the Better Newspaper Contest. Congratulations to everyone! Here’s our list of editorial awards in Class 5 (Weeklies with a circulation of 20,000 or more):

General Excellence, second place; Best Business Coverage, first; Best Business News Story, first, Carol Cizauskas; Best Business Feature Story, first, Jay Jones; Best Explanatory Journalism, first, Kat Kerlin; Best News Feature Story, first, Jay Jones; Best Local Column, first, D. Brian Burghart; Best Local Sports Feature, first, Jay Jones; Best Entertainment Writing, first, Brad Bynum; Best Editorial Writing, first, D. Brian Burghart; Best Special Section (Editorial), first, “Bars & Clubs,”; Best Illustrated Photo, first, David Robert; Best Sports Photo, first, Chris Carnel.

Take note that these are just our first place awards. In other categories, and in some of these categories, we racked up many second and third places. Space prevents me from listing them all.
