We’ll take a cup o’ kindness

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Happy New Year! Sorry that message is a bit stale, but we had the whole RenoGen concept issue going last week. I wanted to end 2010 and go into 2011 with a positive vision for the future.

We’ll see what 2011 will bring. I’m basically an optimist, but I don’t have particularly high hopes that our elected officials will be able to act for the good of the city and state. I’ve seen bad economies before, and the past pattern has shown me government works to prop up failing enterprise while working to undermine its growing and healthy competition—present company excluded, of course.

So what do your New Year’s resolutions look like? I don’t typically do the formal “resolution” thing, but last week, I kept finding myself saying, “I need to make a list of things I want to do this year.” And what’s a goal but a resolution?

I get a lot of stuff done early in the year. I guess it’s just the cycle of a guy who has more taken out in taxes than he has to, so he’ll have a chunk of money at some point in the year.

I have basically three things I want to do this year—that’s excluding the basic maintenance health goals—I want my son Hunter and I to get a vacation, I want to put hardwood down in my living and dining rooms, and I want to get surgery on my right hand.

The hand thing should probably come first in priority—since I can no longer type correctly or put my hand in my pocket—but since it’s a pretty long recovery, and I’m going to teach a class up at the U, I’ll probably make it coincide with vacation. And look at that! We’re already into July.

Anyway, I hope 2011 will be a great year for you and yours. Let’s have some fun this year!
