Welcome new students

Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Brian Burghart, and I’m the editor of the Reno News & Review. I’m sure we’ll get to know each other well over the next four (OK, five) years.

This is the RN&R’s third year creating a special “Welcome to Campus” guide for incoming freshmen. We mainly do it as a service to new students, but we also do it to introduce new students to our regular alt-weekly newspaper, which appears on those red stands all over campus every Thursday. In many ways, the RN&R is your on-campus go-between for the giant world of Northern Nevada.

I’m a graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno. I taught Magazine Writing there last semester. I’ve been associated with the university as a student, observer or instructor since about 1986. The RN&R’s calendar editor, Kelley Lang, is also a graduate from the school on the hill. Dennis Myers, RN&R news editor, has been covering university events since about 1972. While the university has many fine publications devoted strictly to students, the RN&R and UNR do share many common interests, and we hope we’ll be part of your media mix.

I’ll tell you something else: Every story that appears in the Join the Pack section of this newspaper was written by a student. Michael Seibert, our current intern, helped with every aspect of this publication, from coming up with story ideas to writing to doing first-round editing to proofing. You’ll also hear from four brand-new voices for the RN&R: Erin Granat, Clarissa León, Sara Piccola and Kristen Waples. They all did a great job, and I hope they can make time to write for the paper after the semester starts.

So anyway, I hope you enjoy the issue. If you ever want to communicate with me for any reason—write, complain, suggest a story—feel free to call me at 324-4440 ext. 3525, or e-mail me at <script type="text/javascript" language="javascript"> </script>.
