Waste not

“Reduce, reuse, recycle” is a phrase we often hear but rarely practice to the fullest extent. While many of us are content to take out our curbside recyclables every other week, three local designers have gone an extra step and turned everyday trash into treasures. Their creations will be on display in a fashion show titled Trashion: Everyday to Obscure. The event was envisioned by Veronica Coleman of Reno Upcycle, an organization dedicated to finding new purposes for old or unwanted items. Along with Lauren Gifford of Prism Magic Clothing and Imports and Kimberly Phipps-Nichol of Blue Water Studio, the group will show off their designs—some of which are created from garbage bags, paper, old slides, neckties and casino felts and will available for sale that night. The event kicks off with a cocktail party at 7:30 p.m. on March 25 at The Alley, 906 Victorian Ave., Sparks. The fashion show starts at 9:30 p.m., and will be followed by live performances by touring acts Sawyer Family, Viva Le Vox and Trucker’s Wife. Admission is $5.
