Truckee Meadows recession

Gov. Kenny Guinn III cut the ribbon Tuesday to mark the completion of the Reno freeway project.

Begun during the first presidential term of George W. Bush, the project became a way of life for residents of the Truckee Meadows.

Economist Thomas Cargill III predicted a downturn in the valley’s economy now that the project is finished.

“The community had come to rely on the jobs this project created and the money it produced for consumer spending,” Cargill said.

One indication of how long the project has been underway, said Mayor Bob Cashell III, is that when it began, there was no water rationing in the valley.

Highway department spokesperson Scott Magruder III said another reconstruction of the Spaghetti Bowl is scheduled to start next week.
