Tour of the nose

Professional and amateur cyclists from around the country will once again ride through the streets of Reno during the Tour de Nez. The 12th annual celebration of cycling has expanded to three days of racing and revelry at various locations in Reno. The event begins with a showing of the movie A Sunday in Hell, which tells the story of cyclist Eddy Merckx during the 1976 Paris-Roubaix Classic. The show begins 5 p.m. June 24 at Deux Gros Nez, 249 California Ave. The tour continues June 25 with the LeMond Challenge, a 7.5-mile race up Geiger Grade. A 100-mile mountain bike race and 25-mile recreational mountain bike race start 5 a.m. June 26 at Rancho San Rafael Park. The tour’s traditional events—the Masters-level and Pro Criterium races through the downtown river district—start at 4 p.m. June 26. Other happenings include the Bike Messenger Alley Cat Race, Clunker Classic, Kids Race and Messenger Alley Cat Race beginning noon at the Deux. The Tour de Nez wraps up June 27 with the Century Ride and a road race. Of course, it’s not the Tour de Nez without Deux Gros Nez’s anniversary party, which takes place all weekend and includes award ceremonies, live music, belly dancers and other entertainment.
