Tierney Sutton

Blue in Green

On her last album, vocalist Tierney Sutton chose a program of jazz standards that are normally performed as instrumentals. On this one, she takes a similar approach in a more focused vein, performing a set of compositions either written by or closely associated with legendary pianist Bill Evans. All the expected favorites are here—"Waltz for Debby," "Turn Out the Stars," "Detour Ahead," etc.—and Sutton’s smooth, relaxed delivery is a perfect match for the material. Accompanied only by a piano trio (Evans’ own favorite configuration), she soars and whispers with effortless grace, celebrating the legacy of one of jazz piano’s greatest figures while simultaneously staking her own claim to this familiar repertoire.
