The Man Who Wasn’t There

One of the great overlooked performances of 2001, that of Billy Bob Thornton as a barber who gets involved in a blackmail plot, comes to DVD with a glorious commentary track from the Coen Brothers and Thornton. The special features also include a "making of" documentary, deleted material and an interview with cinematographer Roger Deakins, whose work here is some of his best. The Coens have yet to make a bad film, and this one, a black and white film noir that also boasts excellent performances by Frances McDormand, Tony Shalhoub and James Gandolfini, is one of their best. It’s a stunning piece of work that just serves as a reminder that the Coens are as consistent a film team as the medium has ever offered.
