The Fountain

Warner Home Video

I went nuts for this last year, naming it my number-one movie of 2006. I stand by that opinion and found the film even more rewarding after a third viewing. Hugh Jackman moved himself to the top of my, “Wow, What An Actor” list with his performance as a doctor searching for the secret to eternal life. Darren Aronofsky wrote and directed this project—a film originally intended for Brad Pitt—and it’s amazing what he accomplishes in one movie. Jackman is actually required to play three roles: the doctor, a Spanish conquistador and a New Age astronaut. It all ties together in a way that can only be described as amazing. It didn’t get a lot of notice upon its initial release, but I think this will be regarded as a classic in years to come.
