The buzz on Burt’s

Hmmmm, eco-friendly, beeswax-based beauty company and Clorox—together at last? Turns out the company best known for bleach bought Burt’s Bees for $913 million in November, according to an article in the New York Times.

A statement about the move on Burt’s Bees website reads, “This new journey gives us the energy and the resources to do even more. Not only will we be able to accelerate our growth, but this will also help us to grow the natural personal care category in general, furthering our commitment to The Greater Good.”

Clorox says it marks a shift to more green products in its company line, which will include Green Works cleaning products, labeled as 99 percent natural.

It’s not the first time a mainstream giant has bought into the green market. The Times also reported that L’Oreal paid $1.4 billion for The Body Shop, and Colgate-Palmolive bought 84 percent of Tom’s of Maine, a natural toothpaste and deodorant company.
