The Butterfly Effect
Ashton Kutcher stars as a man who discovers a way to travel into his past and fiddle with destiny. This is a unique time travel movie, with Kutcher’s character suffering blackouts as a child, and traveling back into those blackouts as an adult to relive moments in his life and change history. It’s an interesting premise, and it is handled well here, with Kutcher making a fine transition to dramatic acting after a string of goofy comedies. Amy Smart is OK as his love interest, although her moment as a crack whore in an alternate time universe is unintentionally funny. There are plenty of twists and turns, probably too many for some. It has a level of originality that is usually hard to find this early in the year. Also stars Eric Stoltz as a pervert.
