The air up there

You know fall is just around the corner when the Great Reno Balloon Race gets underway. The 24th annual event brings a variety of colorful hot air balloons to the Truckee Meadows including popular entries such as the Energizer Bunny Hot “Hare” Balloon and the May Foundation’s American Eagle balloon. Pilots compete for cash prizes during the event, which includes the Hare & Hound Race and Balloon Blackjack. Spectators should arrive at Rancho San Rafael Park early to see the Glow Show and Dawn Patrol, a choreographed show in which skilled pilots fly their balloons in the dark. But arguably the most exciting part of the event is the mass ascension of more than 100 balloons. The Glow Show begins at 5 a.m., followed by Dawn Patrol at 5:30 a.m., Sept. 10-11. Mass ascension starts at 6:45 a.m. Sept. 9-11 at Rancho San Rafael Park, 1595 N. Sierra St. Admission is free. Call 826-1181.
