Take Me Out

On the list of songs every American knows, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” the 1908 baseball ode by Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer, ranks right up there with “Happy Birthday to You,” the alphabet song, and the Kit Kat jingle. It’s been recorded thousands of times, and just about everyone who has ever attended a baseball game has sung the song during the seventh-inning stretch.

“Take Me Out II,” a new single by The Home Team Band, a group of local studio musicians, is not so much a sequel as it is a remake set to a standard blues vamp. There are some new lyrics—hokey stuff like, “Now, it don’t matter if we win or lose/It’s called baseball and not the blues.”

It’s well executed, I suppose, and so slickly produced it sounds like the soundtrack to an imaginary baseball-themed truck commercial, but it just feels wholly unnecessary.
