Summer send-off

Before you pack up the kids’ backyard swimming pool and store away your warm-weather wardrobe, head out to Fallon for one last blast of summer this Labor Day weekend. The 21st annual Hearts O’ Gold Cantaloupe Festival & Country Fair features exhibits, carnival rides, food, games, a battle of the bands competition, the Lion’s Club junior rodeo and parade and, of course, plenty of sweet Hearts O’ Gold cantaloupes to sample or purchase. The festival kicks off at 5 p.m. Sept. 1 at the Churchill County Fairgrounds, 325 Sheckler Road, Fallon. The event continues 10 a.m. to midnight Sept. 2-3 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 4. Daily admission is $3-$5 and $6-$10 for a four-day festival pass. Call (775) 423-2544.
