Smart start

The Amargosa Farm Road Solar Energy Project was approved this week in southern Nevada. The project by Solar Millenium will produce 500 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 150,000 homes. It’s on 4,350 acres of public lands overseen by the Bureau of Land Management. The Nevada Wilderness Project and The Wilderness Society, conservation groups who’ve been pushing for a “smart from the smart” approach to renewable energy development, support the project. The site has no designated critical habitat for endangered or threatened species and is not a major migration corridor for wildlife. The Ash Meadows Wildlife Refuge is seven miles from the site but isn’t expected to be impacted.
