Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

Rated 2.0 This film is super boring, not what you want out of your basic special-effects extravaganza. There’s been much hype about the look of this film, and, in the end, it’s just not that nifty looking. Computer-generated effects make up the major share of this one (Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law did most of their acting in front of a blue screen), and once the surprise of the film’s retro look wears off, the viewer is left with a story that is something significantly less than enthralling. A thin story might’ve been tolerable had the film’s look been more impressive, but the retro, dingy gray appearance of the picture gets dull fast. The story has something to do with a mad scientist who plots total world annihilation, and his plot involves big robots. Not much more to it. In the end, the movie feels gimmicky and artificial, a well-meaning experiment gone wrong.
