Rudo Y Cursi

Rated 3.0

This is a soccer movie that doesn’t really have any soccer in it. Y tu mama tambien’s Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna reunite, playing brothers on opposing Mexican soccer teams who rise to the top and fall in grand style. The film is a comedy, and it sports some amusing moments, especially Bernal’s character becoming a singing star and covering Cheap Trick’s “I Want You to Want Me.” It’s also uneven, featuring tons of clichés and leaden stretches. Still the two stars make it somewhat worthwhile, and it’s cool to see them together again. Why director Carlos Cuaron chose to not show the actual sport being portrayed in the film is anybody’s guess. This is actually Cuaron’s directing debut; he’s the brother of Alfonso Cuaron, director of tambien and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
