Roots in the land

Local nonprofit Urban Roots Garden Classrooms broke at least figurative ground this past weekend on what will become Urban Roots Farm. The vacant, three-quarter-acre plot was donated by HabeRae Homes. The group (see “Inside out,” Green, Aug. 12, 2010) plans to use it as a site for field trips, summer camps and hands-on learning with local students and teachers.

The property has never been developed or irrigated, so Urban Roots used its groundbreaking as an opportunity to join with Permaculture Northern Nevada in offering a contour mapping and design workshop to determine drainage patterns and help design the site.
