Ring around the Tahoe

Though the water may not be as blue as it used to be, Lake Tahoe and its surroundings still provide one of the most pristine settings in the country. And soon, in an event 20 years in the making, you can be a pioneer and experience it from perspectives few have seen before. Thanks to the efforts of 10,000 volunteers working 200,000 hours, the 150-mile Tahoe Rim Trail will officially open at 2 p.m. Sept. 22. Sen. Harry Reid is slated to give the keynote speech at the ceremony, which highlights a three-day celebration, Sept. 21-23. Other events will include guided hikes, mountain biking and horseback riding. Park at Northstar-at-Tahoe, Highway 267 at Northstar Road; free shuttles will take you to the trail. The event is free and open to the public.
