Reno cleans up its act

Reno is a little bit cleaner than it was last year, according to results from the 2010 Litter Index. Twenty local volunteers surveyed the community on Aug. 17 for this event organized by Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful. Of the 25 areas surveyed, 18 were slightly cleaner than last year, and two stayed the same. The five that did worse than last year were Southeast Reno Neighborhood Advisory Board areas, Spanish Springs, Sun Valley, Hidden Valley and I-80 East. The most improved areas were Northwest Reno, North Valleys, Golden Valley, Horizon Hills and I-80 West. Cleanest overall were Southeast Citizen Advisory Board areas, downtown Reno, central Reno, Horizon Hills, Keystone Canyon and 395 South.

KTMB program director Deidre Kennelly said the nonprofit will use the data to better focus its cleanup efforts throughout the year.

The group also says to keep trash can lids firmly closed, don’t leave trash in the back of truck beds, and, if you see illegal dumping in progress, call 334-COPS (2677) or the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office 329-DUMP (3867) hotline.
