January is National Radon Action Month, and the Nevada Radon Education Program will provide free radon test kits for homeowners. Radon is a colorless, odorless and tasteless radioactive gas that can cause serious illness, including lung cancer. Radon levels often elevate in the winter because residents keep their homes closed up, and a test kit can reveal potentially dangerous levels of the substance. Homes can be treated if traces of radon are found, but symptoms are hard to detect in humans, so taking precautions is advisable.
Members of the education program are available this month to visit classrooms, workspaces and community organizations to share information about the dangers of radon and how to take preventative measures. For more information, visit www.radonnv.com.
