Rachel Getting Married

Rated 4.0

Anne Hathaway plays Kym, a young woman who has had many stints in rehab. She returns home to be in her sister Rachel’s (Rosemarie DeWitt) wedding party, and not everybody is tremendously overjoyed to see her. Directed by Jonathan Demme, the film has a raw, almost documentary feel, and the cast is up to the challenge. Hathaway puts herself into the running for an Oscar nomination, playing a very sensible but ultra troubled person dealing with major problems both present and past. Bill Irwin does perhaps career-best work as Kym’s over-caring father, while Debra Winger comes out of nowhere to deliver her best work in a long time as Kym’s estranged mom. The film has some interesting, quirky touches (Robyn Hitchcock leads the wedding band), and Demme’s approach makes everything feel authentic.
