Owning Mahowny
In one of the best performances this year, Philip Seymour Hoffman is remarkable as a bank manager who digs a mighty deep hole for himself in the form of a gambling debt. Hoffman is devastating as a man who just doesn’t know when to quit, managing to convince casinos that he’s a high roller by gambling with other people’s stolen money. John Hurt is great as a casino owner determined to make his place Hoffman’s stomping ground, and Minnie Driver is excellent as the neglected girlfriend. Hoffman deserves to be an Oscar contender for this one. Story is unbelievable, but it is actually based on real life events.
Dirty Pretty Things has pretty performances and dirty horror grit.

Uptown Girls is a schizoid film that would be better suited to dud stars like Sandra Bullock.
