One for workers

Nevada District Court Judge Kenneth Cory has overturned the Steve Wynn tip policy. He ruled that Michael Tanchek, then Nevada labor commissioner, was incorrect in his 2010 decision approving the policy.

In 2006, Wynn began taking tips from workers and giving them to management while changing the job titles of managers to make them sound more like workers (“Wynning through intimidation” RN&R, Oct. 12, 2006). Under state law, Cory ruled employers cannot prevent workers from setting up their own distribution arrangements for splitting up tips nor can they force workers to surrender tips to the casino.

Wynn Resorts Inc. will appeal Cory’s ruling to the Nevada Supreme Court.
