Notes from the summit
A few more snippets from the city of Reno Green Summit, held June 17 at the University of Nevada, Reno:
• Li Han Chan of the Nevada Institute for Renewable Energy Commercialization (NIREC) announced that the nonprofit is accepting proposals this week for funding. The group awards up to $150,000 in seed money for early-stage companies trying to get their clean energy technology ideas into the marketplace. For more information, visit www.nirec.org.
• Reno has a local chapter of Operation Free, a group of veterans advocating for clean energy who believe climate change and energy dependence are a threat to national security. Find out more about them at www.operationfree.net or by visiting the Operation Free Nevada Facebook page.
• Since the 2008 Green Summit, the city of Reno has used federal stimulus funds and grants to install wind turbines at City Hall, Mira Loma Park and Stead Water Reclamation Facility; put up solar arrays at Corp Yard, Reno Events Center and the Parking Gallery; and light up the Reno arch with LED lighting, among other measures, all of which were requested by citizens during former summits.
