Northfork
The Polish Brothers’ (
Twin Falls Idaho) latest is one of the year’s best looking films, and it’s also very weird. A little too weird. James Woods stars as G man sent to talk people off their property in Northfork, Idaho before the government floods the valley and turns it into a lake. Some great moments, and one great performance from Nick Nolte as a priest consoling a dying young boy, but the film just doesn’t gel. A subplot involving angels hanging around one of the soon to be flooded houses tries to be profound, but winds up being dull. The Polish brothers are trying to tread in subversive David Lynch territory here, and only Lynch can do Lynch. Also stars Anthony Edwards with wooden hands.
Dirty Pretty Things has pretty performances and dirty horror grit.

This might be the goriest mainstream movie ever made.

Uptown Girls is a schizoid film that would be better suited to dud stars like Sandra Bullock.
