Don’t park, and walk<br>Downtown Sparks will lose several street-level parking spaces on C Street between 10th and 11th streets as a result of construction now going on. The sidewalks are being widened, street lanes narrowed, and bulb-outs added to the south side. (That’s those concrete curbs that jut out into the street at the corners.) Asked what problem this change is a solution to, a city spokesperson said that two parking garages nearby are “underutilized” and that a third parking garage in planned. So the lost spaces will apparently not be made up at street level elsewhere. She added, “Wide sidewalks with trees, plazas and ‘pocket parks’ encourage people to walk and create a more urban feel. … [A] wider sidewalk next to a narrower street will promote more people walking and fewer people speeding.” She said the city also has a plan for people headed to special events to park at Reed High School and take the bus downtown.
