One sign of the growing urbanization of this area beyond the Truckee Meadows is these huge structures looming over Washoe City, which was county seat from 1861 to 1871. The structures were built as part of the forthcoming Reno/Carson freeway. They are located up the hill from a pioneer graveyard and down the hill from the former Whittell Wildlife Refuge, which was eliminated because of the encroachment of civilization. A pretty babbling brook is nearby.
