Music notes

One film, Straight, No Chaser, will offer a fascinating, sometimes heartbreaking look at jazz revolutionary Thelonious Monk; another, A Great Day in Harlem, will capture a 1958 gathering of America’s finest jazz performers; a third, Blues in the Night, tells the story of a 1940s jazz group caught up in corruption and seduction. This winter, the Reno Jazz Film Festival will fuse cinematic arts and jazz on four Saturdays: Feb. 2, 9, 16 and 23. Tickets will be available at Soundwave CDs. For more information on this and other upcoming jazz events, check out www.reno-jazz.org, a Web site run by local non-profit jazz guru organization For the Love of Jazz. Although the site isn’t completely up-to-date, it does provide an extensive calendar of events and news from the Reno jazz scene.
