Mr. Manners heard from

The U.S. representative who yelled “You lie” at President Obama during a speech to Congress in 2009—and then parlayed the resulting notoriety into political fundraising prowess—has published an essay objecting to the call by Republican presidential candidates to apply state’s rights principles to the issue of where to dump nuclear waste. In an Oct. 18 debate, candidates Ron Paul, Mitt Romney and Rick Perry came out in opposition to opening the proposed dump for high level nuclear wastes at Nevada’s Yucca Mountain in Nye County (“Dump switch,” RN&R, Nov. 3).

U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson wrote in the Augusta Chronicle, “Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich was the closest to getting the issue right. However, even he stated Nevada should be compensated for playing host to the repository, as though jobs and investment in the state of Nevada are not enough. … I encourage my fellow voters in South Carolina to raise this issue with the Republican candidates and to hold them accountable for a permanent nuclear repository at Yucca Mountain if elected.”
