Modern love

Another Broadway hit heads to Reno this weekend when the touring production of Thoroughly Modern Millie rolls into town. The musical, based on the 1967 film starring Julie Andrews, centers on Millie Dillmount, a Midwestern girl who moves to the Big Apple in search of love and a “modern marriage” during the Roaring Twenties. Millie exchanges her country girl appearance for that of a flapper and gets a job as a stenographer—with the hopes of a marriage proposal from her wealthy boss. The Oscar-winning movie (for music score) was adapted to the stage in the early 2000s. The adaptation maintained the basic storyline of the original but toned down some of the ethnic stereotypes seen in the film version. The musical received good reviews during its runs on Broadway and London’s West End. In 2002, the Broadway production won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Actress and Best Choreography. Thoroughly Modern Millie performances are 8 p.m. Dec. 2-3, 2 p.m. Dec. 3-4 and 7 p.m. Dec. 4 at Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, 100 S. Virginia St. Tickets are $35-$70. Call 686-6600.
